When I first saw this picture published on my neighbor's blog
Katrina: A Midcity Blog, I really didn't want to go back. Although the shotgun double where I live is not in this picture, the absolute devastation of this image taken in mid-September made the storm more real for me than any of the surreal news footage because it was/is just a typical New Orleans street, one that I walked down on my way to the local coffee shop to prepare for classes or meet a new colleague. Now with the spectacular waters receded, the modest homes on this street were left wounded, raw and bare, for all of us to see.

And just think, most of the city, except for Uptown, looks just like that or worse. Since Friday,I've been helping family members empty their houses out. If you think the outsides look bad, you don't want to see the insides. After tomorrow I'm stopping. Even with a mask on, I'm still developing a cough.
It's amazing how much that picture looks like a warzone. It makes me wonder if that street is going to retain those houses, if theyre going to be torn down or not.
A picture is worth a thousand words. You must have been devastated. I don't think it hits you until you know someone who actually had this happen to them. I lost a little too but it still hurts to see so many others in pain.
Wow.. that really looks like a war zone. I am amazed at how destructive this storm was. Those historic areas of New Orleans don't look like they will be the same. Who knows how long it will take to clean all of this up (or dismantle all of it is more like it).
